GREATER is a mobile app developed by the non-profit organization QWELL to enhance the wellbeing, health, and wealth of the LGBTQIA+ community. However, the app struggled with user retention due to limited opportunities for interaction and impact. Our client wanted to motivate users to take more action in the community while also meeting the needs of local businesses. Throughout the semester, I collaborated with a design team to redesign the homepage and refocus the app’s purpose.

Alongside our client, we keyed the idea of gamification as a solution for the app. To determine our approach, we conducted a competitive analysis of home feeds and gamified apps, exploring how other apps handled similar challenges.

Our client provided a reference to guide our low-fidelity designs. We thought, how might we reimagine this in a clean way that aligns with our brand? We designed 5 new features that encourage user engagement while preserving the home feed’s core functionality.

I quickly designed low-fidelity wireframes for the home feed based on our client’s reference. I experimented adding gamification aspects to bring a new energy to the brand.

Our client was unsatisfied with our low-fidelity design, and after re-evaluation, we realized it was too overcomplicated for users. Discussing with our client helped us validate our concerns and give us the thumbs up for certain designs. We concluded that:

Splitting the homepage into 3 tabs felt unintuitive and didn’t align with the homepage’s purpose. Moving forward, we eliminated the rewards and wallet tabs so we could relocate them to the profile page.

Too many different section styles can feel disconnected. Maintaining consistency with familiar layouts creates a smoother and more cohesive experience.

Be feasible and be realistic ⚖️

As designers, we have the freedom to be creative, but we must also ensure our designs are feasible within a multidisciplinary team. While I received positive feedback on my rainbow shadow concept, it ultimately wasn’t implemented in the product launch due to engineering limitations. It is important to set realistic standards and consider what is achievable within your team while making design decisions.

Since this was my first UX design experience, I quickly learned the importance of clear and frequent communication within a team. I often reached out to my design lead for help with Figma and to validate my ideas. In the beginning, we had miscommunication with our client and didn’t realize they wanted gamification in the redesign. This oversight caused a setback, forcing us to pivot midway through the design process and start over. Looking back, I should’ve been more proactive in getting confirmation and ensuring that everyone was on the same page. When in doubt, overcommunicate!

A huge thank you to my design lead Imelda, for believing in me and mentoring me throughout the semester. To my fellow design member Aubin, thank you for your collaboration and support every step of the way. This being my first UX design project, I’m incredibly grateful to have worked with both of you and learned so much along the journey!
